Will Your Breasts Look Natural After Breast Augmentation?

Women planning on undergoing breast augmentation are primarily anxious about how their breasts will look after the surgery – whether or not they’ll look completely artificial or real, too big, too small or just right, etc. Having a sense of what look you’d like to achieve prior to going under the knife is key as is finding a board-certified plastic surgeon you’re comfortable with who will help you through the process. A skilled and experienced surgeon will provide you with insights and options in order to achieve the most natural aesthetic possible with implants. They will discuss a multitude of factors with you, including the implant shape, size, type and texture, as well as placement options tailored to your individual body.

So What is ‘Natural Looking’ Breast Augmentation?

A natural looking augmentation procedure creates breasts in the ideal shape and size proportionate to your entire body. In other words, people won’t necessarily be able to tell that they’re not your own. The augmentation itself is subtle and you look well-balanced post-surgery.

Factors that contribute to the more natural looking augmented breast procedures include the following:

Breasts will have a gentle slope and project forward towards the nipple
The nipple is on the most projected part of the breast
The implants will have a tear drop shape similar to natural breasts
The cleavage is at a similar distance when compared to natural breasts
In other words, nothing looks artificial and to the untrained eye, it would be a challenge to ascertain whether your breasts have been “helped” or not.

How to Achieve Natural Looking Breasts with Implants?

Natural looking breast augmentation results come from careful planning on the part of the surgeon and performing the procedure on a patient who has realistic expectations for their outcome. It is important to understand that breast augmentation should ultimately enhance the existing breasts without placing excess weight and volume that could not only look unnatural, but have an adverse impact on your overall health as well. Disproportionately large breasts can cause back problems among other issues.

When selecting breast implants things to consider include your body shape, chest width, routine activities, and physical activities requiring exertion outside the normal scope of daily activities as well as your height and weight. Each of these can and should play a role in what will work best for you and your lifestyle. Again, if you’re considering augmentation, find a board-certified plastic surgeon and one who specializes in breast augmentation. They can walk you through the process, make you comfortable, help guide you to the right implants for you and share before and after photos of patients who’ve already gone through the process themselves, with results they were quite satisfied with.

What Look is best for me? Or How Big Should I Go?

Many of my patients ask me this question, while others come in with a pre-planned breast implant size in mind. The final decision lies with the patient; however in instances where the patient is not sure, I prefer to decide the size based on the body shape of the patient.

When you try different sizes and look into the mirror, you can clearly determine the look that suits you best. You will be shown before and after photos that can help you determine the best placement, size, and type of implant that will suit you best.

There’s a Slight Catch in This – Look at the nude pictures of the patients. Clothes always show breasts that are supported, lifted, and held firmly at their position. Reviewing full breast nude photos will give you a clear picture.

An integrated approach to healing after cosmetic surgery

Anticipating surgery can be stressful. Being pro-active before surgery and being prepared for after surgery care has the benefit of feeling better and healing faster as well as eliminating pain medication sooner.

In order to steer clear of the “what ifs”, you must prepare your body for the healing process by focusing on a positive outcome. An optimistic approach has shown to be a beneficial tool for healing. Your body also needs an array of nutrients to support and repair itself afterwards, including quality carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water are all essential in the healing process. If these needs are not met, body tissues such as muscle and tendons start to break down. This will directly impact your recovery as well as your healing. A few weeks after surgery is a good time to re-visit eating habits and adjust as needed if body weight has fluctuated.

Here are some tips for pre-surgery that may help you speed up your recovery as well as make you more comfortable:

  • Commit to your current weight until several weeks after surgery. It is essential to continue to consume an adequate amount of calories to support your overall energy level.
  • Try moving your body every day depending on your fitness level. Even short daily walks will benefit you in the long run.
  • Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages several weeks prior to surgery.
  • Eliminate sugar free drinks that contain sugar alcohols (Equal, Splenda) as they can cause increase gas and bloating.
  • Increase your fiber intake, which will promote healthy bowel movements.
  • Strive for at least 8 (8-10oz) glasses a day. Adequate hydration is essential for your body to heal.

In order to heal properly, it is important that you choose a wide variety of nutrients to support tissue repair.

Essential nutrients include high quality:
Proteins: lean protein, poultry, fish and seafood, legumes, nuts and seeds
Carbohydrates: fruits and vegetables: organic if possible, whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, oats
Fats: expeller pressed oils: olive, canola, sunflower, organic butter, avocado, nut butter
Vitamins and Minerals including: vitamins C-D-A, calcium, zinc, iron
Every person has a different response to surgery. Being in the best possible health before surgery will assist with recovery and healing.

If you are unsure or question how to prepare for your surgery, please call the office of Dr. Mahesh and Jagruti Patel, Kaya Kalp Aesthetics and arrange a session with our qualified nutritionist and recovery coach, Mary Grazen-Browne. She will discuss the best approach for you, from support, supplementation, food prep and at home needs.

An integrated approach to healing is the best choice in being pro-active in your healing. Take time to cultivate healthy habits, not just due to surgery, but for a lifetime of healthier living.

Be Well,

KayaKalp Cares for Breasts

KayaKalp Cares for BreastsOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month; an annual campaign to keep awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Pink ribbons are everywhere and we are all encouraged to “shop pink” to help support the campaign.  But beyond October, breast cancer, and the color “Pink”, many men and women face issues with their breasts and do not know where to go for help. North of Boston, KayaKalp Aesthetics in Beverly, continues to help patients with various breast challenges.

KayaKalp offers the following breast surgical services:  Breast Augmentation /Enlargement, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, and Male Breast Reduction.  During a Breast Augmentation a patient may have their breasts size enhanced during a 1 to 2 hour procedure in which the plastic surgeon uses silicone implants or inflatable implants filled with saline.  A Breast Lift, also known as Mastopexy, is a procedure that patients who struggle with sagging breasts that may have lost their shape or firmness after a pregnancy, nursing, and weight change or age, will offer the positive results they are looking for. The procedure takes on average 1 to 3 hours and the surgeon will reshape the breast by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. Finally, KayaKalp Aesthetics offers Breast Reductions, known as Reduction Mammoplasty for women and Gynecomastia for men.  Having large breasts can aggravate the body in many ways causing pain in the back and neck area. For women, large breasts can also cause skin irritations to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. Breast augmentation, reduction and lifts can all be used in breast reconstructions for breast cancer patients.

Each year it is estimated that over 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but the death rates from breast cancer have declined since 1990 because of the early detection, increased awareness and improved treatment. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) which was signed into law October 21, 1998 helps protect many women with breast cancer who choose to have their breasts rebuilt (reconstructed) after a mastectomy. Women with a mastectomy can have a reconstruction and a symmetry procedure on the other breast be it a reduction, augmentation, fat grafting or a breast lift and it is all covered by their insurances.  KayaKalp Aesthetics would like to remind you to go for regular check-ups and screenings and if you are in need of additional care for your breasts to contact us for a consultation at 978.927.6556.

Skin Cancer and Sunblock

Skin Cancer and SunblockAccording to the 2016 CANCER FACTS & FIGURES REPORT by the American Cancer Society, an estimated 76,380 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in the U.S in 2016 and an estimated 10,130 people will die of it this year. Although today it is well known that our skin should be protected from the sun with the daily use of a sunscreen, it can be neglected without optimal protection if the sunscreen is not used correctly optimally. In fact, there have been reports that sunscreen causes cancer, but this is misleading because the reason behind this information is that they are finding that people are not wearing the right kind of sunscreen, reapplying sunscreen often enough, and having a false sense of security from using sunscreen and not using common sense approach to sun protection.

At KayaKalp Aesthetics our doctors have been treating patients with skin cancer for many years and helping our patients to learn about proper skin care and to know the facts about sun protection. Skin cancers can form even with and after use of sunscreens due to previous UV exposure. But, sunscreens will reduce the risk of additional UV damage. Use and reapply sunscreen daily, even under shade and on a cloudy day. It is also important to use sunscreen with zinc or titanium oxide as the active ingredients are better and they should be applied every 2 hours. The sunscreen cannot be left in a car or direct heat since that breaks down the sun protective factors.

Other Sun Safety Tips

  • Wear sunglasses- Reduces sun exposure that can lead to cataracts and other eye damage.
  • Wear sun protective clothing- reduces the amount of radiation reaching the skin
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat- protects areas prone to sun overexposure i.e. eyes, ears, face and the back of neck
  • Use sunscreen before you go out, and reapply every two hours. (check with KayaKalp to learn about quality sunscreens.)
  • Water resistant sunscreens will come off when you towel off sweat or water.
  • Be aware- children under six months of age should never have sunscreen applied to their skin; protect by sun avoidance
  • Avoid midday sun when the sun’s UV rays are strongest.
  • Pay attention to the UV Index- indicates the degree of caution to be taken when outdoors and provides a forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to the sun and predicts exposure levels on a scale of 0 to10+.

Low risk = 0

In addition to learning sun safety tips, it is also important that people check their skin daily for changes. If skin cancer is detected before it spreads and is treated properly there is a high cure rate. Some basic signs and symptoms of skin cancer to watch for is an unusual mole. Most normal moles are evenly colored with one color of brown, tan or black. It can be flat or raised and shaped in a circle or oval. The most important warning sign of skin cancer is a new spot on the skin or an existing spot that is changing in size, shape, or color. A common rule to remember from the American Cancer Society is the ABCDE rule.

  • A is for Asymmetry: One half of a mole or birthmark does not match the other.
  • B is for Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
  • C is for Color: The color is not the same all over and may include different shades of brown or black, or sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
  • D is for Diameter: The spot is larger than 6 millimeters across (about ¼ inch – the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can sometimes be smaller than this.
  • E is for Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.

Finally, if you are concerned about an unusual mole or want to learn more about skin care and sun protection please contact our office at 978-927-6556 to schedule a consult or email our doctor at jpatel@kayakalp.com .
