The SmartLipo™ uses laser technology to melt and liquefy fat. In addition it tightens the skin by delivering laser thermal injury to the deepest area of the skin, and coagulate the skin, where the collagen remodeling takes place.
The SmartLipo™ procedure is noted to be safer than the conventional liposuction techniques and has minimal bleeding with minimal invasion. How SmartLipo™ Works
The SmartLipo™ laser-assisted lipolysis system is a highly efficacious solution for destroying and permanently eliminating fat cells:
- A 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser fiber is introduced through a small cannula, delivering energy directly to subcutaneous fat cells-causing them to rupture. The emitted fat melting energy also coagulates tissue, thus inducing collagen retraction and tissue tightening.
- The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately—resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising than conventional liposuction, for faster healing and recovery.
- SmartLipo™ can supplement or augment traditional methods of cellulite treatment.

Planning for SmartLipo™
It is very important that you find a physician who has adequate training and experience in SmartLipo™. Dr. M. Patel or Dr. J. Patel may offer you SmartLipo™ or suggest a combination of techniques to obtain the best result for you.
During your initial consultation, it is important that you discuss your expectations with Dr. M. Patel or Dr. J. Patel. Don't hesitate to ask any questions or express any concerns that you may have. Expect Dr. M. Patel or Dr. J. Patel to explain the planned procedure in detail, including its risks and benefits, the recovery period and the costs. Remember, SmartLipo™ procedures are not covered by medical insurance.
Before your SmartLipo™
The success and safety of your procedure depends very much on your complete candidness during your consultation. You’ll be asked a number of questions about your health, desires and lifestyle.
Be prepared to discuss:
- Why you want the surgery, your expectations and desired outcome
- Medical conditions, drug allergies and medical treatments
- Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs
- Previous surgeries
Your surgeon may also:
- Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors
- Discuss the options available to you for fat removal and body sculpturing
- Examine and measure your areas of concern
- Take photographs for your medical record
- Discuss your options and recommend a course of treatment
- Discuss likely outcomes SmartLipo™ and any risks or potential complications
- Discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used
Prior to surgery, you may be asked to:
- Get lab testing or a medical evaluation
- Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
- Stop smoking well in advance of surgery
- Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding
Special instructions you receive will cover:
- What to do on the night before and morning of surgery
- The use of anesthesia during your SmartLipo™ procedure
- Post-operative care and follow-up
Dr. M. Patel or Dr. J. Patel will also discuss where your procedure will be performed. The SmartLipo™ procedure is routinely performed in the office under the current guidelines of sterile practices and procedures. You will be asked to take an oral medication (e.g., valium) to decrease any stress or anxiety that you may experience which may be associated with the procedure.
You’ll need help
Since your SmartLipo™ is being performed in the office, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.
Steps Involving the SmartLipo™ Procedure
Step 1 – Anesthesia
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Local infiltration with lidocaine is used to anesthetize the areas to be treated. You will be prepped and draped in the standard sterile surgical fashion.
Small 1mm incisions are made in strategic areas for introduction of the SmartLipo™ cannula. Anesthesia of the deeper fat and tissues will be achieved with infiltration of tumescent solution (Normal saline with 0.5 % marcaine with epinephrine and lidocaine)
Step 2 – The Procedure
The laser fiber will be used to dissolve the fat in the deeper tissue and this fat will be suctioned out. The SmartLipo™ Laser will then be applied to the underside of the skin (deep dermis) to coagulate the skin and cause a thermal injury to help it remodel.
You will be dressed in a post operative garment with compression foam that is key in the recovery process. They encourage healing by preventing the affected tissue from shifting and help I the overall contouring process of the skin and body.
For your safety we require that someone drive you home. You will not be able to drive yourself.
Step 3 – See the results
The visible improvements after SmartLipo™ procedures appear as swelling and bruising subside. Initially you will see the bruising for 5-7 days. Then after a few weeks , as the majority of the swelling subsides, the tissues will begin to tighten. Changes in the areas treated can be seen in as early as 2 weeks, but the microscopic changes will continue for much longer.
Safety and risks of SmartLipo™ surgery
The decision to have a neck lift is extremely personal and you’ll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable.
Dr. M. Patel or Dr. J. Patel will explain in detail the risks associated with surgery. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure you will undergo and any risks and potential complications.
Like any surgical procedure the risks can include , but are niot limited to the following
- Skin loss
- Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
- Fatty tissue found deep in the skin might die (fat necrosis)
- Fluid accumulation
- Pain, which may persist
- Skin contour irregularities
- Skin discoloration, sensitivity or swelling
- Asymmetry
- Unsatisfactory results
- Revision Surgery
After Your SmartLipo™ procedure
If you experience shortness of breath, chest pains, or unusual heart beats, seek medical attention immediately. Should any of these complications occur, you may require hospitalization and additional treatment.
The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure. Another surgery may be necessary.
Be careful
Following your physician’s instructions is key to the success of your surgery. It is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during the time of healing. Avoid wearing any clothing that must go over your head. Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for yourself.
