An integrated approach to healing after cosmetic surgery

Anticipating surgery can be stressful. Being pro-active before surgery and being prepared for after surgery care has the benefit of feeling better and healing faster as well as eliminating pain medication sooner.

In order to steer clear of the “what ifs”, you must prepare your body for the healing process by focusing on a positive outcome. An optimistic approach has shown to be a beneficial tool for healing. Your body also needs an array of nutrients to support and repair itself afterwards, including quality carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water are all essential in the healing process. If these needs are not met, body tissues such as muscle and tendons start to break down. This will directly impact your recovery as well as your healing. A few weeks after surgery is a good time to re-visit eating habits and adjust as needed if body weight has fluctuated.

Here are some tips for pre-surgery that may help you speed up your recovery as well as make you more comfortable:

  • Commit to your current weight until several weeks after surgery. It is essential to continue to consume an adequate amount of calories to support your overall energy level.
  • Try moving your body every day depending on your fitness level. Even short daily walks will benefit you in the long run.
  • Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages several weeks prior to surgery.
  • Eliminate sugar free drinks that contain sugar alcohols (Equal, Splenda) as they can cause increase gas and bloating.
  • Increase your fiber intake, which will promote healthy bowel movements.
  • Strive for at least 8 (8-10oz) glasses a day. Adequate hydration is essential for your body to heal.

In order to heal properly, it is important that you choose a wide variety of nutrients to support tissue repair.

Essential nutrients include high quality:
Proteins: lean protein, poultry, fish and seafood, legumes, nuts and seeds
Carbohydrates: fruits and vegetables: organic if possible, whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, oats
Fats: expeller pressed oils: olive, canola, sunflower, organic butter, avocado, nut butter
Vitamins and Minerals including: vitamins C-D-A, calcium, zinc, iron
Every person has a different response to surgery. Being in the best possible health before surgery will assist with recovery and healing.

KayaKalp Cares for Breasts

KayaKalp Cares for BreastsOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month; an annual campaign to keep awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Pink ribbons are everywhere and we are all encouraged to “shop pink” to help support the campaign.  But beyond October, breast cancer, and the color “Pink”, many men and women face issues with their breasts and do not know where to go for help. North of Boston, KayaKalp Aesthetics in Beverly, continues to help patients with various breast challenges.

KayaKalp offers the following breast surgical services:  Breast Augmentation /Enlargement, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, and Male Breast Reduction.  During a Breast Augmentation a patient may have their breasts size enhanced during a 1 to 2 hour procedure in which the plastic surgeon uses silicone implants or inflatable implants filled with saline.  A Breast Lift, also known as Mastopexy, is a procedure that patients who struggle with sagging breasts that may have lost their shape or firmness after a pregnancy, nursing, and weight change or age, will offer the positive results they are looking for. The procedure takes on average 1 to 3 hours and the surgeon will reshape the breast by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. Finally, KayaKalp Aesthetics offers Breast Reductions, known as Reduction Mammoplasty for women and Gynecomastia for men.  Having large breasts can aggravate the body in many ways causing pain in the back and neck area. For women, large breasts can also cause skin irritations to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. Breast augmentation, reduction and lifts can all be used in breast reconstructions for breast cancer patients.

Each year it is estimated that over 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but the death rates from breast cancer have declined since 1990 because of the early detection, increased awareness and improved treatment. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) which was signed into law October 21, 1998 helps protect many women with breast cancer who choose to have their breasts rebuilt (reconstructed) after a mastectomy. Women with a mastectomy can have a reconstruction and a symmetry procedure on the other breast be it a reduction, augmentation, fat grafting or a breast lift and it is all covered by their insurances.  KayaKalp Aesthetics would like to remind you to go for regular check-ups and screenings and if you are in need of additional care for your breasts to contact us for a consultation at 978.927.6556.
